SECTION III: ADAPTATIONS OF B.A.B. 66-KEY MUSIC TO THE 165 SCALE

The B.A.B. Organ Company, Brooklyn, N.Y., grew out of a partnership formed in the 1920's between two Italian-Americans, Ernesto Bona* and Andrew Antoniazzi. The partnership was later expanded to include Dominick Brugnolotti, and from the initials of these three men the company took its name. According to an interview with Mr. Antoniazzi taped by Tim Trager, the company originally made barrel-operated street pianos, later expanding into the organ business. Tim Trager's research suggests that B.A.B. took over the book music department of the Berni Organ Company, included in which acquisition were foot-operated book punching machines from Gavioli's New York Bond Street office, headed by Louis Berni, Gavioli's agent for America and Canada.

During the time period which concerns this catalog, B.A.B.'s main business was the conversion of band organs using European cardboard music books or using American roll systems for which music had become unavailable. From this conversion work developed the other principal B.A.B. activity: producing music rolls for organs converted to the B.A.B. system, which was an Artizan-like pressure system, not using vacuum to read the rolls as Wurlitzer did. This of course made no difference in the music roll, only in the organ pneumatics.

To accommodate the scales of the organs converted to play their rolls, the company manufactured music rolls of several different sizes. The notebooks of Oswald Wurdeman, who acquired part of the assets of the B.A.B. Organ Company, show listings for 46-key, 61-key, 65-key, 66-key, 82-key, and 87-key tunes, and Reblitz/Bowers (see below) shows others, though the majority of rolls produced were apparently 46-key, 48-key, 66-key, and 87-key rolls. The 66-key roll (actually it has 67 holes, counting the first hole, shown on scale diagrams as a "shut off") had a scale almost idenitcal to the Wurlitzer 165 scale. Therefore it was a relatively simple task for Play-Rite to switch the lines leading from its roll reader to the punching dies of its production perforator so that the notes punched into a B.A.B. roll would be properly re-positioned to make a playable style 165 copy of the B.A.B. roll. Thus were created the 56 rolls listed below.

B.A.B. rolls have 8 holes per inch for a .125" spacing on center. The roll itself is 9 inches wide compared to the Wurlitzer 165 width of 9 5/8 inches. A principal difference between the B.A.B. roll and its Wurlitzer counterpart is that the B.A.B. system uses multiplexing within the organ to control both the triangle and the bass drum by the same perforation, while the snare drum perforation (actually there are two holes for the snare drum, one for each drumstick) also controls the castanets. When the organ's loud registers are on, the multiplexing switches the bass drum and snare drum into play; when the loud registers are off, the triangle and castanets play instead of the drums. Play-Rite adaptations of B.A.B. 66-key rolls to the 165 scale did not reckon with this complication, so that these converted rolls play only the drums, while the triangle and castanets remain silent throughout every converted roll.

B.A.B. produced only forty-four 66-key rolls before going out of business in 1957. These rolls were numbered from 1 (issued in 1928) to 44 (issued in 1957). Rolls shown below with numbers higher than 44 result from a vexatious policy of Ozzie Wurdeman, who produced rolls using the old B.A.B. masters and equipment after 1957: customers willing to pay a premium price for the privilege could choose the tunes to be included on a roll; the extra copies were held in stock to be sold at regular prices. Consequently Wurdeman B.A.B. rolls repeat certain tunes from roll to roll ad nauseam, and the tunes on a given roll often lack musical coherence with each other.

It is possible to reconstruct the contents -- or nearly so -- of all but the earliest of the original 44 66-key rolls, using the Wurdeman notebooks supplemented by other sources and the knowledge of B.A.B. afficionados such as Larry Villano and George Karpel. (
Our reconstruction is shown in the Appendix to this catalog). Apparently Ozzie Wurdeman himself made an attempt in that direction, with limited success, using the data he had. The B.A.B. masters for each roll were kept together in a large bag, but with the passage of time and the diaspora of the masters between Minneapolis (Wurdeman) and Virginia City, Mont. (Senator Bovey), that evidence had become as garbled as many B.A.B. tune titles. Most -- perhaps all -- B.A.B. music was arranged by J. Lawrence Cook, better known for his work for the QRS Piano Roll Company. Tunes selected for B.A.B. rolls reflect the company's Italian roots in the number of Italian or European tunes used. They were often tunes published by Italian Book Company, a New York music publisher -- a relationship similar to that which seems to have existed between Wurlitzer and the Vandersloot Music Publishing Company in Williamsport, Pa. Many of the misspellings of B.A.B. tunes titles clearly stem from someone's inability to read another's handwriting -- particularly difficult to do when the language is foreign to the reader. The Wurdeman notebooks carry ample evidence of this problem, and at the same time have allowed us to arrive at correct spellings by collecting and comparing the various misspellings. * The spelling "Borna" given in Reblitz/Bowers is incorrect; "Bona" appears on an original company decal seen by me on a street piano sold by Bona and Antoniazzi, and the spelling "Bona" is corroborated by Fred Dahlinger, Jr., historian-archivist, Circus World Museum, Baraboo, Wisc. Also, Ernesto is given in sources as "Ervista," but that is not a normal Italian forename, and Brugnolotti descendants remember his name as "Ernesto." (Sources: Reblitz/Bowers Treasures of Mechanical Music (Vestal, N.Y. : Vestal Press, 1981); Oswald Wurdeman's notebooks; personal recollections of George Karpel; papers of Gavin McDonough (B.A.B. Organ Company, Richmond, Va.), who also extensively corrected the B.A.B. tune listings as reflected on Play-Rite labels; information from band organ historian Tim T. Trager; correspondence with Brugnolotti grandson, Edward Radonic, and other members of the family)
